*The male Australian native Superb Fairy Wren, calling for his mate"
This beautiful artwork depicts the male fairy wren's longing for his mate. The background is highly textured and fluid, and the blues and blacks of the wren pop against the backdrop.
During breeding season, male Superb Fairy Wren displays an intense, vibrant blue plumage to attract females. Older males tend to keep their colours longer than younger ones, which is a trait favoured by females. In the non-breeding season, the males become brown, resembling females, but retain a blue tail and greyish legs.
They are highly territorial and social, often found in groups consisting of one dominant male and several females and young individuals.
