The Laughing Kookaburra is known as the Bushman’s Clock (or alarm clock), because it’s incredibly loud, distinctive, laughter-like call acts as a natural alarm, reliably signalling dusk and dawn. These vocalisations are used to mark territory and are frequently heard at sunrise and sunset, acting as a time-keeper for people in the bush. Although if you hear kookaburras at mid-day, it’s said to be a sure sign of rain.
